Junior ARDL Seminar: ‘Building and navigating a career in regulatory and disciplinary law: identifying the right role for you and how to get there’ – panel discussion

"Join us as Junior ARDL hosts this in-person event at Clyde & Co, London EC3A 7AR. The event is aimed at Junior members of the Association (0-10 years PQE) to help develop their careers in regulatory and disciplinary law.

This interactive session will host a panel of lawyers and barristers, each sharing their own story about their career path, touching on how and why they came to practise in their current role, and sharing any insights gleaned from their routes to qualification and experiences along the way. Members will have the opportunity to ask any questions, and the session will be followed by an informal drinks reception and the opportunity to network."

The Speakers

Alecsandra Manning-Rees is a barrister and joint deputy head of the Professional Disciplinary team at 5 St Andrew’s Hill. She is a specialist fitness to practise, professional disciplinary & regulatory barrister. She acts for both regulators and regulated professionals. She was appointed a Legal Adviser to the General Optical Council in 2023.

Emma Dowd is a solicitor and Senior Associate within the regulatory team at Capsticks Solicitors LLP. She has over 13 years’ experience in working with professional regulators including the Teaching Regulation Agency, Solicitors Regulation Authority and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Emma has varied experience in the field of professional regulation, including managing complex investigations, strategic case advice to a team of investigators, delivering in-house training to staff, presenting to members of the profession, oversight of high profile investigations, making decisions to impose regulatory fines and reprimands, recommending interventions into law firms, managing investigations in Asia Pacific, and was involved with a number of key projects including changes to the threshold matrix for decision making.

Michael Bewsey is a solicitor and Lead Associate in the Enforcement Legal Group at the Financial Conduct Authority. He advises on regulatory investigations and litigation across the full range of FCA actions, including conduct of disciplinary, supervisory and prohibition proceedings in the Upper Tribunal and civil litigation in the High Court. Michael has worked in financial services for over 20 years and, before qualifying as a solicitor, led complex complaints and internal investigations for the FSA/FCA and in the pensions, investment, and insurance sectors. He also sits as an Independent Review Panel member, hearing final appeals on school admissions and permanent exclusions.

Rowena Lewis is a partner in the Professional and Financial Disputes team at Clyde & Co.  She qualified in 2008 and for around the past 12 years has specialised in acting for auditors and accountants (including tax advisors and insolvency practitioners) in relation to regulatory investigations and disciplinary proceedings, and in the defence of professional negligence claims.  Prior to joining Clyde & Co in 2022, Rowena spent five years working as an in house lawyer in the Office of General Counsel at one of the Big 4 accountancy firms, KPMG.
