Venue: | Room XXII, Palais des Nations, Geneva |
Leading international law and human rights barrister Ben Keith will speak at a critical UNHRC side-event during the 58th Session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC58), discussing the rights of landmine victims to compensation. The event, co-hosted by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the UN and the Universal Rights Group (URG), marks the launch of the Campaign for Landmine Justice.
The event takes place ahead of the International Day of Mine Awareness on 4th April. The Campaign for Landmine Justice will advocate for the recognition of compensation rights for landmine victims, holding manufacturers and deploying states accountable. The discussion will also highlight the interconnections between landmines, human rights, and environmental degradation.
Commenting on the campaign launch, Ben Keith stated: “More needs to be done to hold landmine manufacturers and the state actors that fund them accountable for the long-term threat their weapons pose to human life. At present, there is an absence of an international framework that would compel those responsible for landmine production and use to compensate their victims.”
Ben co-authored an article on the subject for Euronews.
