Haulage company boss Kieran Hughes was imprisoned for 6 years yesterday by HHJ MacDonald QC at Maidstone Crown Court after being convicted of organising the smuggling of 14 lorry loads of contraband whisky and vodka across the Channel. The duty evaded by his gang amounted to £1.8m. One of his drivers, William Canning, received 27 months for helping to supervise part of the fraud.
Kevin Dent and David McNeill were instructed to prosecute Operation Lighthouse, one of HMRC’s largest alcohol fraud cases in recent years.
