Jose was instructed on a privately-funded basis to defend a male accused of people trafficking 8 Romanians, including a child, and then holding them in servitude or slavery. During the trial, the complainants gave their evidence on Romanian time from a Romanian court room presided over by a Romanian Judge which was streamed live into Kingston Crown Court to be viewed by the Trial Judge and Jury in our jurisdiction.
Jose sensitively and carefully cross-examined the civilian prosecution witnesses, drawing out multiple inconsistencies between their accounts. After 8 weeks, the jury returned not guilty verdicts on half the counts and were hung on the other half. Demonstrating Jose's specialist expertise defending in modern slavery cases.
